What's In A Name?

I haven't had any time to write lately nor have I really had much to write about. I'm still so incredibly excited about going active with our consultant in January! Kyle and I each have our individual interviews set up with the social worker - mine is this Saturday and his is next Friday. Yesterday I finished up my medical examination and Kyle is getting his done next week.

Names have been a hot topic at our house and among our family lately. Since we are going active with the consultant in two months and we could get matched with a birth mother anywhere from two weeks to a few months after that we have decided to go ahead and pick out names. I know some people are funny about sharing names with people or try to make people guess up until the day the baby is born but I will list the names that top our list.

Girl: Caroline Ann or Penelope ("Penny") Carol.
Boy: Patrick Thomas, Isaiah Thomas, Charlie Thomas or Isaac Thomas. We are probably go with Patrick if we find out we are having a son.

Let me explain. To me, names really mean something. I know I do not have to name a child after every single amazing person in our families but I am very adament about naming our children after my parents. My parents provided the best life they could for me and continue to be such amazing examples of the Lord and even though I could never repay them for being the amazing parents they have been to me, I feel like I can honor them with naming my first daughter and my first son after them. My mom's name is Carol and so Kyle and I agreed on the name Caroline (even though my mom's name is just Carol and not Caroline I feel like it's still honoring her). Ann, the middle name, is after my Grandmother, Mary Ann. My Grandmother was such a fantastic woman of God and I was so very close to her. I miss her so much and I need to stop writing about her before I start crying. Anyways, that is how we came up with Caroline Ann. Another name we love is Penelope and calling her Penny for short. Yes, I am serious. Everyone laughs whenever we say Penelope but we just really like the name and we especially love the name Penny. I will have to go into great detail about the name Penny during some other post but I will tell you it has to do with one of my favorite songs by my favorite band. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that if we have a daughter, a stipulation I have on the name is that she has to have a name that is in a song so I can sing to her a song with her name in it. Caroline has "Sweet Caroline" and actually last night at a concert I realized that a song off of my favorite band's new cd has the name Caroline in it (I'm not even joking when I said I just realized it) and Penny and Me is one of my favorite songs by my favorite band. The middle name for Penelope is Carol. Again, that is my mom's name so if we go with the name Penelope (remember, Penny for short), her middle name will be Carol to honor my mom.

Molly, Faith, Grace and Anna were in on the top 6 of our list (oh, the name Chloe was Kyle's third choice but I couldn't agree to that) but we have decided not to go with those. I probably even shouldn't put this in writing or mention it but I also kind of liked the name Miley. No, not because of Miley Cyrus. Miley is kind of a mixture of our names and I thought it sounded cute. That was nixed really quickly by Kyle. I also really liked Georgia. So, Caroline or Penelope (Penny) are the top 2.

We had a hard time agreeing on boy names. It seemed like all of the boys names I liked Kyle didn't. Finally we agreed on the ones listed above. We have always liked Patrick but we almost didn't put it on our list at first because we don't want people calling our son Pat. We realize that people may call him this as he gets older and if that's what our son wants that is fine but as long as we have a say he will go by Patrick. I just found out yesterday that Patrick is a family name on my mom's side. Thomas will be the middle name no matter what the first name is because Thomas is my dad's name. I have always liked the name Charlie and Kyle likes it, too. Isaiah and Isaac are nice strong names so we like those, too.

When we first started tossing around ideas for boys names I really liked Austin, Simon, Shepherd, Nickolas ("Nick"), Zachary ("Zac"), Jonah and Luke. I've gotten more than a few laughs out of the names Simon and Shepherd but that's okay. I'm no longer interested in those names and even if I was that would be okay. I really liked the name Milo for some reason but Kyle does not like it at all.
